Mucosal Immunology

Mucosal immunology is the study of immune system reactions at mucosal membranes of the intestines, urogenital tract, and respiratory system, i.e., surfaces in contact with the outside world. In a healthy state, the mucosal immune system protects against pathogens while allowing non-harmful commensal microbes and benign environmental chemicals to pass through. MALT, or mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue, is a critical initial line of defence for the organism. The tonsils and MALT, like the spleen and lymph nodes, are considered secondary lymphoid tissue. Serving as the body’s initial line of defence against antigens and infection, the mucosal immune system has three major tasks. Systemic immune responses to commensal microorganisms and dietary antigens can be avoided (primarily food proteins in the Gut-associated lymphoid tissue, so-called oral tolerance). Managing proper immunological responses to infections that are met on a daily basis.
