Immunoassay is a highly selective bioanalytical approach that uses an antibody or antigen as a biorecognition agent to quantify the presence or concentration of analytes ranging from tiny molecules to macromolecules in a solution. An immunoassay takes advantage of the immune system's innate antibody-antigen binding specificity. Antibodies produced by the body's adaptive immune response are highly selective for certain antigens. This is why we get vaccines, for example, to assist our immune systems create an antibody repertoire response to elements of an antigen before we encounter it in a more pathogenic state. These highly specific antibodies will be used in the immunoassay to look for molecules of interest in mixes with other compounds. Immunoassays can be used in situations where a molecule needs to be detected or isolated from a mixture. The test can be used to detect infections in a clinical sample or to determine the amount of a target biomolecule in a sample.
