Immunodermatology is the study of skin as an immune organ in health and illness. Photo-immunology (the effects of UV light on skin defence), inflammatory diseases like Hidradenitis suppurativa, allergic contact dermatitis, and atopic eczema, presumably autoimmune skin diseases like vitiligo and psoriasis, and finally the immunology of microbial skin diseases like retrovirus infections and leprosy have all received special attention. Biologicals that neutralise TNF-alfa and chemokine receptor inhibitors are among the new medicines in development for immunomodulation of prevalent immunological skin diseases. Many disorders affecting epithelial organs, such as the skin, oral, vaginal, and ocular mucous membranes, as well as the gastrointestinal and respiratory tracts, require immunodermatology testing for proper diagnosis and therapy.
